Moul cards two over at Qatar Masters

4:50pm Monday 6th February 2012

GOLF: ESSEX golfer Jamie Moul carded a two-over par round of 74 to finish the Commercialbank Qatar Masters in a tie for 69th position.

He wasn’t able to repeat the heroics of his second round – when he eclipsed some of golf’s superstar names to make the cut – but it was an important finish for the 27-year-old Stoke by Nayland member.

The event in Doha was Moul’s third PGA European Tour event of the year and probably the highest-profile tournament of his professional career to date.

His final round score saw him claim a pay cheque of 3,188 euros and placed him alongside Ryder Cup star Francesco Molinari in the overall standings.

Moul came back from a tough opening day, when he finished at five-over par, but he struck back in fine form with a a six-under second round to make sure he figured in the final round.

That second round of Moul’s was only bettered on the day by Denmark’s Thomas Björn and surpassed those of superstars such as world number three Lee Westwood and number four Martin Kaymer.

It saw him jump 72 places in the overall standings at the two-and-a-half million euro event as he moved up to 34th place overall alongside big-hitting Spaniard Alvaro Quiros and Molinari.

He played alongside Quiros in the last round, but was unable to match his previous day’s heroics and had to settle for a finish in 69th spot.

It wasn’t a straightforward tournament for Moul or his fellow compeitors as they had to contend with strong winds coming in off the desert during the opening part of the week.

Gusts of 45mph meant less than three hours of play was possible on the second day and the second leg of the Tour’s Middle East swing had to lose one of its four scheduled rounds.
