Saxophone workshop before big show

MOBO award winning saxophonist Yolanda Brown is offering ticket holders for her show in Grays the chance to take part in a special workshop.

Yolanda is performing at the Thameside Theatre, in Orsett Road, on Saturday, at 7.30pm.

The workshop starts at 2.30pm, and anyone who has a ticket for the show will get to meet Yolanda and play music, as well as hearing how she rose to fame.

Yolanda, who is the UK’s premier female saxophonist is on tour promoting her first album, April Showers May Flowers.

She said of her music: “People often ask me what my target audience is, thing is, when I look out into the audience at my shows, I can't really tell.

“I see all sorts, all ethnicities, all ages, either sex.

“So really, I guess, I'm making music for everyone. I mean, why limit yourself?”

Yolanda was born in Barking in the early 1980’s.A talent for music emerged at the age of six and she settled on the saxophone at the age of 13.

She refused to have music lessons and taught herself.

She won the MOBO Award for ‘Best Jazz’ in 2008 and 2009 and has performed for the president of Russia and the prime minister of Jamaica.

She has also met the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, and is the celebrity Ambassador for the Prince’s Trust, as well as a patron of Mayor of London Boris Johnson’s MFYM Fund.

Places for the workshop must be pre-booked with the theatre’s box office to confirm ages and level of standard (grades) of attendees.
