Consultation on south Essex rail franchise

2:07pm Tuesday 21st February 2012

COMMUTERS are being asked how train services can be improved when the Essex Thameside rail franchise contract is renewed next year.

Government officials have launched the 12-week consultation to allow train users and interested groups to have a say about what changes and improvements by the new franchise.

Train operator c2c currently runs the franchise.

The contract for the franchise, which covers train services from London Fenchurch Street, through Basildon, Tilbury, Chafford Hundred and Southend, is due for renewal next May and potential bidders will take on the new 15 year contract.

The consultation is part of the Government’s shake-up of the rail franchising system to improve service and value for money.

Rail minister Theresa Villiers said: “This consultation provides an opportunity for stakeholders to play a key role in shaping the future of the Essex Thameside franchise.

“This will ensure the rail industry is able to respond more quickly and flexibly to changing passenger concerns.”

Stephen Metcalfe, MP for South Basildon and East Thurrock, added: “This is an opportunity for residents from across south Essex to shape the future of their rail service.

“All I want to ensure is whoever is successful in winning the next franchise will continue to deliver a service that is consistently performing well in terms of punctuality and reliability.”
