Thurrock hit by snow blizzards
11:48am Monday 6th February 2012

THURROCK was blanketed in snow over the weekend as up to 16cm of snow fell overnight on Saturday.
Gritters worked throughout the night to ensure main roads throughout the borough were kept clear.
Salt was spread as early as 7.30pm on Saturday night in anticipation for the big freeze with further gritting at 11.30pm and 3.25am on Sunday morning.
Council workers spent most of Sunday clearing secondary routes around Thurrock while gritting crews completed another round at 7.30am.
Volunteer staff were also drafted in to clear snow from footpaths in Aveley, South Ockendon, Grays, Purfleet, Stanford-le-Hope, Chadwell St Mary and Tilbury.
All schools throughout the borough have opened today (Monday), however due to icy roads and pavements off of the main gritting routes, waste and recycling collections have been suspended for a day.
