£240,000 in grants for community groups

7:50am Sunday 29th January 2012

COMMUNITY groups and residents can bid for a series of cash grants from Thurrock Council.

More than £240,000 worth of grants are available for community groups, faith groups and residents to apply for to improve their part of the borough.

The community first Government initiative is a £135,640 cash pot for Chadwell St Mary, Tilbury St Chads, Tilbury Riverside and Thurrock Park and West Thurrock and South Stifford.

A community panel needs to be established with up to eight residents to identify and recommend projects and activities that need funding.

Seven councillors in Stanford East and Corringham Town, Tilbury St Chads and Chafford South will each be able to tap into £6,000 worth of funding for improvements within their area.

The funding, as part of the devolved councillor budget scheme, aims to engage residents to identify improvements within the community.

Voluntary, community and faith organisations within Thurrock are also eligible for a share of £81,000.

It is hoped the cash pot will help fufill Thurrock Council’s priority of building pride, respect and responsibility in communities and residents. The grant is available through the Thurrock Council for Voluntary Service.

Problem families are also being offered a lifeline in a bid to improve probation, mental health and housing services through a Government grant. £20,000 is available through the early intervention grant to deliver a project plan for families who need extra help.
